I firmly believe that writing for kids should even so reflect good writing.Merely because they're kids doesn't mean that you should throw in a agglomeration of explosions or fighting to keep them interested. No, I believe that children, like adults, learn how to write from what they read. I'm not but talking about grammar, here. I'yard talking nearly fashion, descriptions, expression -- the whole shebangbang.
And the ameliorate the writing is now, the better it will be in the futurity, when today's kids grow upwards and write books of their ain.
This is why I'm so disappointed with this book. Gordon Korman wrote This Can't Exist Happening at Macdonald Hall when he was only twelve -- it was published when he was fourteen. The Bruno & Boots serial was full of fun and energy -- I wanted to move to Canada and nourish Miss Scrimmage's Finishing School for Young Ladies then that I could appoint in shenanigans with the boys at McDonald Hall. His characters were believable and had a lot of depth under all the fun.
How can it be that Korman'due south writing got worse equally he got older?
Later reading The Maze of Bones, the only things that made me read the 2d book in the series were that: A. my ix-year-old buddy BN was looking forward to lending it to me, and B. the 2d book was written by Gordon Korman. I figured that if anyone could rescue this series from a crappy 2nd installment, it was Korman.
I was incorrect. I was so, so wrong.
The second installment in the serial takes the kids from France to Austria to Italy. This time, they're chasing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We become a lot of nice Mozart factoids forth the way, just I'm dubious as to the accuracy of some of them. For example, the book claims that Mozart had a twin sister. He did have a sis, simply they weren't twins. What's up with that, Korman?
But my biggest beef with this volume wasn't the inaccuracies. It was the lack of mode.
Perchance information technology's considering he was given such crappy characters to work with in the first place, but the book was just as two-dimensional as its predecessor. I guess I was expecting as well much -- if Korman read Rick Riordan'south installment and then tried to copy his (flat) way, then he did too adept a job. Korman, sometimes, it'southward okay to turn down a task.
Really, the just thing One Imitation Note really does is get the Cahill kids from France to Italy, from whence they will fly off to Japan. *sigh*
Human being, I miss Ellen Raskin so much.

This is volume 2 in the 39 Clues series. When I finished book one, I wasn't certain if I wanted to proceed on with the story. This second volume is written by Gordon Korman. He does a nifty job continuing the story started by Rick Riordin in The Maze of Bones. Even the cat Saladin is back and he'south on a hunger strike, which adds a humorous element to this action packed story. Another fun installment in the 39 CLUES series!Hither, in volume ii, author Gordon Korman takes the helm from Rick Riordan to steer the Cahill siblings toward their next destination and their next big inkling.
It's obvious that Korman and Riordan accept different writing styles, and I acknowledge it took me a few capacity to adjust, simply once I did I ended up enjoying Korman's style quite a fleck and felt he continued with the feel of the characters and the structure of the plot.
Are the books literary masterpieces? No, not really. Just, they achieve something vivid in their own way.
The bang-up matter about these books is how easy they are to read and how rapidly 1 can (and wants, in my case) to read through them. Of course, this does pb to sense of wanting/needing more. Sometimes I felt the arcs of the characters weren't as conspicuously divers every bit the arc of the plot, and then that kind of was a bummer because I was left wanting more. I know this volume is just one in a huge series, but even so, I wanted more for the emotional place the characters were at the time.
However, the skilful of all this is that the books (so far) are page turners and I absolutely dearest the fact that you can "play along."
I've already ordered my re-create of book three! I'm glad I embarked on this journeying with the Cahills and I can't wait to take the next stride with them.

The premise is i The first book in the 39 Clues series was written by Rick Riordan and was full of his trademark action, fast-pace and humour. This, the second installment, doesn't deliver what Riordan's first offering did, but it is still an entertaining and twist-filled chance that develops this serial well.
This installment follows on from Maze of Bones and continues the adventures of Dan and Amy as they hunt down the clues left to them by the grandmother which lead to an unknown treasure. The premise is intriguing and Korman takes total reward of it, delivering a string of action gear up pieces and some keen tension and suspense along the mode. There is rarely a dull moment, probably because the folio count is so low, and its pretty addictive reading. The short folio count leaves piddling room for grapheme development, but Korman manages to feed some in then that the characters aren't simply cardboard cut-outs.
With a plot filled with twists and charade, information technology makes for an heady read. Not up to the scratch of Rick Riordan's get-go installment, only an enjoyable 2nd outing that will appeal to Indiana Jones fans or anyone looking for a quick, escapist read.
Recommended.

My favorite scene was proba Rick Riordan did a pretty bad chore with the first book in this serial, and Gordon Korman did zippo to try to fix Riordan's mistakes in this book. Amy and Dan (especially Amy) were only equally mean and annoying every bit e'er. If they're going to be main characters, can't they exist kinder to each other?
The villains continued to be silly and foolish. Why did information technology seem like they were ever abaft behind Amy and Dan, spying on them, and non trying to figure out the clues themselves?
My favorite scene was probably when Dan tricked Irina Spasky, but even and then, shouldn't Irina have been more intelligent considering how she used to work for the KGB?
Overall, there was nothing in this book that defenseless my interest. Every situation most seemed unrealistic. Yep, I will read the adjacent i, but only because they go to South Korea. ...more

1. What did you think this volume was well-nigh?
I think the volume is nearly a family unit of powerful figures. It is more closely based on Amy and Dan Cahill, ii orphans, who lost their parents in a house burn. The reason I think this is because the book is almost e'er following what Dan and Amy are doing, like looking for clues, searching to detect a place to hide. I too recollect Dan and Amy are the two "underdogs" because they are just kids going upward against celebrities, families and adults who likewise have much more money than them.
ii. Did you feel the book fulfilled your expectations? Where you lot disappointed?
I exercise feel the book fulfilled my expectations because it was always adventurous with the search for clues, chases or a spirited argument which never left a dull moment. I practise non remember I was ever disappointed with this book because information technology was just so interesting and vibrant. One reason I was so happy with the book was "their rivals would end at nothing to defeat them". P.3
3. Did you lot savour the book? Why? Why not?
Aye, I enjoyed the book and there were many reasons, such equally constant suspense of waiting for Dan and Amy to observe a hint to a clue. "We got to go moving". P.1. or when the book stopped talking about Dan and Amy for a affiliate or so. These were the kinds of things that kept me wondering.
4. How did the book compare to other books by the author (or other books in the aforementioned genre)?
In comparing this book to some other by the aforementioned author, I think this book was better because the actions in the other volume were not realistic. In "Swindle" where a group of kids break into a highly secure store with sports memorabilia in it, they are trying to strike back. I did not savor "Swindle" as much every bit "1 False Annotation" just information technology was still good.
five. What near the plot? Did it pull you lot in; or did you feel you had to force yourself to read the volume?
In this book, I always felt pulled in to continue reading and I take never felt forced to read this book. The plot makes me want to keep reading because it was an interesting read. There was always something happening. It never felt similar a gap in the reading. These things make this book more enjoyable and exciting for me.
6. Were the characters realistic? Would you want to meet any of the characters? Did you like them? Hate them?
I did think the characters were pretty well realistic because they are just 11 and fourteen years erstwhile kids who accept lost their parents in a tragic fire. If I could meet any of the characters, I probably would want to encounter Dan and Amy and enquire them questions. Some questions I might inquire would exist what information technology is like to be able to travel around the world. Or, is it scary knowing people are chasing yous? As for liking or hating the characters, I really similar Dan and Amy, merely I don't hate the Kabras, the Holts or even Irina, I just dislike them.
7. Did the actions of the characters seem plausible? Why? Why not?
Yes the actions of the characters seem plausible. There actions were possible because they never jumped 10 feet in the air or ran super fast. Another reason things they did could have happened are "Their competition has private jets." P.two. Since Amy and Dan's parents are expressionless they accept coin similar the competition and they are stuck on "the slowest train in Europe". P.one. These are just several reasons their actions are plausible.
10. What are some of the book's themes? How important are they?
There are many themes in the volume such every bit jealousy. I time I noticed jealousy in this was when Amy and Dan thought "the Kabras had money; the Holts had muscle; Irina had guile and training; Alistair had feel and Jonah had fame". P.171. simply "Nosotros had wits and little else". P.171.
Amy and Dan were jealous because they didn't accept the advantages the other competitors had. Another theme in this story is rivalry. I noticed rivalry many times such every bit when teams were going through towns and they would chase Amy and Dan to see if they found something. Too, when teams constitute leads and others would do anything to steal them.
12. Did the volume stop the style yous expected?
Yep, the volume ended the way I expected when Amy and Dan establish a clue. The way they constitute it was non how I expected because they discovered information technology in writing on the blade of a sword. Then the clue leads them to Japan for book 3.
13. Would you recommend this book to other readers? To your shut friend?
I would definitely recommend this book to other readers because it was enjoyable. I think it is a proficient read because there is not-end action and adventure. Yes, I would recommend this volume to all of my friends. Even if my twenty-four hour period wasn't great, I looked forrard to reading it before I went to sleep.
xiv. If you lot were casting these characters in a movie-what thespian/actresses would play them?
The main characters of "39 Clues, One False Annotation", flick would have Abigail Breslin as Amy and Max Records as Dan. Abigail is an experienced actress and I have seen her in "Lilliputian Miss Sunshine and "Anecdote, Hero of Central Park". Recently, she was in "My Sis'south Keeper". Max Records gave a bully performance in "Where the Wild Things Are" and I think they would piece of work well together every bit the brother and sister duo in this movie.
fifteen. What was your favourite function/scene of the book?
One of my favourite scenes is when Dan and Amy are stuck in a fancy hotel with Nannerl's Mozart's diary they only stole from Jonah. They are racing effectually the hotel then Dan decided they were going to jump from the 2nd flooring. He jumped but Amy was frightened. Then she jumped and they escaped in a taxi. It was a good scene considering it was suspenseful and exciting.
16. What was your to the lowest degree favourite role/scene of the book?
I did not detect a function I really didn't like. I establish the book to exist full of activity, family unit competition but definitely not friendly competition.
17. Did you learn anything from the volume that you didn't already know?
I learned from the volume that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was built-in in Austria and he lived there for most of his life. I thought this was interesting because I always idea he was from Germany. I besides found out Mozart had a sis Nannerl Mozart. She was equal if not better than Wolfgang but considering she was a woman, she could not perform in public as he did.
18. On a scale from 1-5, what would you requite this book-what would take fabricated this book better.
I would requite "One Faux Note" 4 out of v. I enjoyed it very much and there was rarely a dull moment. I also thought about how amazing information technology would bee to exist related to someone like Mozart and have such a powerful family.
Gordon Korman did an amazing job to make this book come up alive and I experience like I actually know Amy and Dan Cahill. It was a folio turner and I look forwards to reading the other books in this series. The interesting thing about this series so far is that each book has a different author. I picked this book in the serial considering I had previously read another book by Gordon Korman.
